Changes to Sports Funding September 2026

From September 2026, the Government is introducing changes to the way school sport funding is provided. The current Primary PE and Sport Premium is being phased out and replaced by a new PE and School Sport Partnerships Network, which aims to provide schools with greater access to specialist support, coaching, competitions and high-quality physical education opportunities. During the 2026 to 2027 transition period, schools will continue to receive dedicated support through transitional funding arrangements, while the new network is established. The changes are designed to improve participation in physical activity, strengthen provision for all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds and ensure that every child has access to high-quality sport and physical activity opportunities both within and beyond the school day. Further details about our allocation and how funding will be used to benefit pupils will be published as government guidance becomes available.

In July 2025, 100% of our Year 6 children left North Cadbury C of E Primary School being able to: swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. 100% could also use a range of swimming strokes effectively and perform a safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

At North Cadbury Primary School, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, active, and fulfilling life. We are committed to inspiring a lifelong love of movement and sport, ensuring that physical activity is a natural and enjoyable part of every child’s daily routine.

The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that all children and young people should engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day, with a recommendation of 20 minutes for children and young people with disabilities. As a small, rural school with a big ambition for our pupils, we see this as a vital part of our mission to nurture happy, healthy, and confident learners.

Our aim is to provide high-quality PE and sport for a minimum of two hours per week, enriched by a broad range of extracurricular activities and opportunities for competition. By doing so, we not only help our pupils to improve their health and wellbeing, but we also support their personal growth, confidence, teamwork, and academic success.

We use the PE and Sport Premium funding to:

• Create lasting, sustainable improvements in PE, sport, and physical activity across the school.

• Champion equal access to sport for all pupils, ensuring every child has the chance to discover their passion for movement.

• Invest in our staff, equipping them with the training and professional development they need to deliver inspiring, structured, and high-quality PE lessons.

Background:

Sports Funding is provided to primary schools to improve the provision of Physical Education (PE) and sport.  This funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport and is allocated directly to primary school head teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.  

Purpose of Funding:

The Sports Premium Funding  can only be spent on sport, PE and Healthy Lifestyles provision in schools, although schools have the freedom to choose how best to do this.  Schools are held accountable for how they spend their funding and are required to publish on-line information about how they have used the additional funding.  OFSTED will play a significant role in ensuring that schools target this funding in areas which will lead to clear outcomes in raising standards and opportunities in PE and school sport for all children throughout the Primary Phase.
